Cal Poly’s commitment to environmental innovation was clearly demonstrated at the 2024 Environmental Challenge International (ECi) Competition, where our exceptional team claimed the top prize! This prestigious event, held at the Annual Conference in June, provides student teams with the opportunity to propose effective solutions to simulated environmental problems based on real-world conditions. Teams present their solutions to a panel of environmental professionals, gaining experience working collaboratively, interacting with industry experts, and tackling complex environmental challenges. This year’s competition focused on Waste Management and Air Quality Challenges from Cattle Feedlots, set in a small community in Alberta affected by contamination from a nearby feedlot. Participants were tasked with addressing critical issues such as groundwater contamination from nitrates, air quality degradation due to methane emissions, and the impact of dust and methane on vulnerable community members. The challenge required teams to develop sustainable, long-term solutions that are technologically feasible as well as review existing and proposed regulations and programs related to feedlot emissions.
Cal Poly’s team demonstrated exceptional skill and creativity at ECi this year. Our competition team members included:
- Ramy Wahba
- Santina Gatti
