Support Our Student Clubs
AWWA Cal Poly SLO — more commonly known as Cal Poly WaterWorks — is a water resources club at Cal Poly and a student chapter of the American Water Works Association (AWWA). Our goal is to further awareness of sustainable water management practices by connecting students to academic and professional opportunities. Each year, we host guest speakers, take part in the EPA’s Annual Campus RainWorks Challenge, collaborate on hands-on water-related projects, participate in volunteering opportunities, and more.
The Cal Poly student chapter of CalGeo, formed at the beginning of the Fall 2013 quarter, is Cal Poly’s first club devoted to Geotechnical Engineering. The goal of CalGeo is to propagate and preserve the interest of Geotechnical Engineering among Cal Poly students, and to provide our members with academic and professional connections to ensure their success in the world of Geotechnical Engineering.
Most engineering disciplines have a recognized national honor society. For the Civil and Environmental Engineering professions, Chi Epsilon fill this role. Students and professionals are selected to become members based on recognition of their scholarship, character, practicality, and sociability, considered by Chi Epsilon to be the four primary traits of a successful engineer. For student members, scholarship is determined by being in the top third of their junior or senior class. Members of Chi Epsilon are considered top graduates and are highly sought by civil and environmental engineering employers.
Our concrete canoe team is one of our prized traditions and has been part of student life for over 30 years. Through teamwork, leadership and hard work, the Cal Poly concrete canoe team has placed in the top five in 12 of the last 14 years with 5 national titles. When you support our endowment, your contribution is invested with and becomes part of our endowment. An annual distribution is made to the concrete canoe team to help cover expenses associated with constructing and traveling for the concrete canoe conferences. Because the principal remains intact the fund will generate support in perpetuity.
ITE is an organization dedicated to connecting and educating transportation professionals. The Cal Poly San Luis Obispo student chapter aims to connect students with peers and professionals, to explore the opportunities within the field, and to make a lasting and meaningful impact on the community and profession.
Cal Poly’s Society of Civil Engineers (SCE) is one of many student chapters within the American Society of Civil Engineers organization. SCE is a club that focuses on promoting personal, professional, and scholastic development with academic and social events such as general meetings, career fairs, hiking, camping, and more. SCE also has two major project teams called Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge which provide members opportunities to get hands-on experience that they may not experience in their classroom environment.
The Society of Environmental Engineers (SENVE) provides students with social, academic, and professional resources. Club members have opportunities to network with industry speakers at every meeting and meet other students through social activities like camping and banquets. Throughout the year, SENVE hosts professional networking events, and does community service and outreach. SENVE is associated with 3 different design competition teams which students can get involved in for credit, and is also a student chapter of the Air and Waste Management Association.
Cal Poly Steel Bridge is a competition team consisting of undergraduate students within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Every year team members work together to plan, design, fabricate and construct a one-tenth scale model steel bridge to compete at the Pacific Southwest Conference and the National Student Steel Bridge Competition in the Spring. This project incorporates technical knowledge with hands-on experience consistent with Cal Poly’s “Learn By Doing” motto.

Hal Cota Endowed Air Pollution Laboratory
Dr. Harold (Hal) Cota, helped found the Environmental Engineering Program at Cal Poly in 1968. During the 50 years that followed, he has been a valuable contributor and supporter of this program. We are delighted to honor Dr. Cota’s contributions to the program by establishing an endowment to support the Air Quality Measurements Lab to continue to provide students with high-quality laboratory opportunities. In honor of Dr. Cota, we would like to name this lab the “Hal Cota Air Pollution Control Lab” and use the endowment to provide much need upgrades to the lab equipment. Email us at ceenve@calpoly.edu to donate.
