Bio

Dave Houghton brings a diverse engineering background and a focus on sustainability to his instructional approach at Cal Poly. Drawing on more than thirty years in the energy efficiency field, Dave’s background includes building science research and reporting, utility consulting and executive leadership, and plenty of hands-on experience in building systems engineering. He is the co-author of widely recognized books and reports on energy efficiency, and has been structural or mechanical engineer-of-record for hundreds of building projects. He is a registered professional engineer in both civil and mechanical disciplines.

In addition to teaching at Cal Poly, Dave is a principal at two local companies providing engineering services and energy technology research. His consulting activities include mechanical system design, owner’s representation, emerging technology evaluation, and strategic planning for utilities. He is an instrument-rated commercial pilot and enjoys biking, hiking, tennis, golf, and playing guitar and mandolin.
