Frequently Asked Questions

Please bring multiple copies of your resume (10-15, depending on your goals), a notepad, and a pen for taking notes.

We highly recommend that you come in business casual clothing.

Utilize a FREE Cal Poly Career Service and obtain high-quality professional clothing through Cal Poly’s Professional Clothing Closet.

  1. Keep It Polished, Not Overdressed:
Business casual is all about looking professional without being too formal. It is a compromise between jeans and a full suit.

  2. Stick to Neutral or Classic Colors:
Opt for neutral tones like black, navy, gray, white, or beige. If you want a pop of color, keep it subtle and avoid anything overly bright or loud.

  3. Choose Clean, Well-Fitted Clothing:
Ensure your outfit fits well—not too tight or too baggy. Your clothes should be clean, wrinkle-free, and in good condition (no holes or frays).

  4. Shoes Matter:
Go for neat, professional, closed-toe shoes. Flats, loafers, low heels, or polished leather sneakers are great options. Avoid flip-flops, overly casual sneakers, or scuffed shoes.

  5. Keep Accessories Simple:
Subtle jewelry, a sleek watch, or a professional bag can enhance your look without distraction.

  6. Avoid Anything Too Casual or Flashy:
Skip graphic t-shirts, hoodies, ripped jeans, or overly trendy items. Business casual should look neat and put together.

  7. Layer Smartly:
Adding a blazer, cardigan, or tailored jacket can elevate your outfit and make it look more professional.

Pro Tip: If you’re unsure whether your outfit is appropriate, it’s better to lean slightly more professional. Dressing well shows you’re taking the opportunity seriously!

Research the companies attending and list the ones you’re interested in. Learn about their mission, values, and any available positions. Prepare a 30-second elevator pitch introducing yourself, your major, your career goals, and why you’re interested in their company.

Practice your introduction and questions in advance with a friend or career counselor. Remember, recruiters are there to meet students—they want to hear from you! Start with a company you’re less focused on to build confidence before approaching your top choices.

Start by introducing yourself with a smile and a firm handshake. Use your elevator pitch to break the ice, then ask specific questions about the company or position. Don’t forget to express enthusiasm and end the conversation by thanking them and asking for a business card.

Follow up with a thank-you email to any recruiters you spoke with, ideally within 24-48 hours. Mention something specific you discussed to help them remember you. If you’re interested in applying for a role, do so promptly and reference your conversation in your application.
