Evaluation of the Crack, Seat and Overlay Method in California
Pavement rehabilitation is big business in California: Caltrans spent over $400 million to fix roads in 2004 alone. Although the crack, seat and overlay method is the standard for rehabilitation of older pavement, Caltrans says there is little data to support its use. Caltrans has funded Rahim’s winning research proposal with a $135,000 grant to provide performance and prediction models for the standard pavement rehabilitation method.
Rahim's research includes an exhaustive search of Caltrans’ database to evaluate previous performance of the method, as well as comparison of this data with core samples taken from sites throughout California.
During summer 2007, Rahim will travel to California's Central Valley and other places to collect core samples and perform surveys to investigate for distresses. Once he has the coring data, Rahim will be able to make predictions and provide the necessary information for Caltrans to establish life-cycle costs. Rahim believes he will have these results by early summer 2008.
Civil engineering student Daniel Kuhmann, who graduated in spring 2007, worked with Rahim and based his master's thesis on the research. In the coming year, another graduate student will have the opportunity to work with Rahim on this "real world" applied research project.
