Industry Leader Sponsors CE Lab

May 02, 2007

Kiewit, a leader in heavy construction responsible for building some of the most modern and technically challenging bridges in North America, is set to be the new sponsor of a civil engineering lab on campus.

The newly refurbished Kiewit Civil Engineering Materials Laboratory will serve to enhance the Civil Engineering program’s hands-on, project- and design-centered undergraduate curriculum. The lab will also provide students with the opportunity to use state-of-the-art equipment for individual project-based learning.

Lab director, Associate Professor Dr. Dan Jansen, not only oversees lab resources, but also for guest lectures from Kiewit representatives and seeks out future employee recruitment opportunities.

Kiewit Pacific has a long-standing relationship with Cal Poly: a Kiewit employee and Cal Poly alumnus maintains a presence on the Civil & Environmental Engineering Industrial Advisory Board.

Department Chair Dr. Gregg Fiegel said there are many additional benefits for Kiewit that come with lab sponsorship, including improved access to students.

“They’ve been pleased with Cal Poly interns and hires, and desired a bigger presence in the civil engineering program,” notes Fiegel. “Sponsorship is a great way to accomplish that goal.”
